Vegan BBQ Chickpea Sweet Potato Pizza

I “Heart” Sweet Potatoes – I Admit it!!

My homemade Vegan BBQ Chickpea Sweet Potato Pizza is the perfect balance of sweet and spicy in every bite!  If you are looking for a protein packed pizza – this is it and it will NOT  disappoint. Normally I use my Sweet Potato Crust recipe with my Buffalo Chickpea topping (recipe coming soon), but had this crazy idea of making it more of a BBQ style pizza.  Seriously, I love sweet potatoes and spicy together, the mixture just goes hand in hand.

Vegan BBQ Chickpea Sweet Potato Pizza

A tip when making the crust – the warmer the potatoes when mixing the ingredients together, the better.  It helps make it super creamy and spreads really nice.  You can make your own vegan ranch or purchase, but you HAVE to top your pizza with it, you’ll be drooling before you take your first bite I promise!

Here is my simple recipe for Vegan Ranch (note: I just used dried herbs and it turns out perfect, but you can use fresh if you have on hand) ->

Vegan Ranch DressingVegan Ranch Dressing

  • 1 cup Vegan Mayo
  • 1/2 cup Non-Dairy Milk (Original Unsweetened Almond Breeze is my go to)
  • 1/2 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Onion Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/4 tsp Black Pepper
  • 2 tbsp dried or fresh Chives
  • 1 tsp  dried or fresh Parsley
  • 1/2 tsp dried Dill

Mix all ingredients together and chill in refrigerator until ready to serve.

Garbanzo Bean Flour

For my Sweet Potato Crust I use Chickpea Flour instead of wheat or all purpose flour.  Chickpea Flour is also know as Garbanzo Bean Flour, and can be found at most grocery stores AND it’s gluten free.  I have seen it both in the baking isle and gluten free section of my local grocery store.

What is Garbanzo Bean Flour? Garbanzo Bean Flour is stone ground from rich and hearty whole garbanzo beans. It is high in fiber It is also loaded with protein, high in dietary fiber, a great source of iron and a popular ingredient for gluten free baking.  In most all of my recipes I replace regular flour with Chickpea Flour and love the out come!

Okay, so who’s ready for PIZZA?

If you’re a working mom like I am and having the luxury of having a husband who might be home before you, then send him a quick text a hour before you’ll be home and tell him to toss those two sweet potatoes in the oven for you!  Once home it will be time to make the sweet potato crust and you’ll only be 45 minutes until an amazing pizza!!

Serves: 4 Cooking Time: 45 minutes

  • 2 Large Sweet Potatoes (roasted)
  • 1 tbsp Chia Seeds or Ground Flax Seeds
  • 3 tbsp Warm Water
  • 1 1/2 cup Chickpea Flour
  • 1 tbsp Olive Oil
  • 1 tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1 tsp Dried Oregano
  • Handful fresh Cilantro
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 tbsp Red Pepper Flakes
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 can Chickpeas, drained
  • 1/2 cup Red Onion, Diced
  • 1 cup Fresh Spinach
  • 1/4 cup Sun Dried Tomatoes
  • 1 Jalapeno, diced
  • BBQ Sauce

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Wash sweet potatoes, poke a few times with a fork and wrap in tin foil.

Place potatoes on baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 60 minutes until tinder.

Remove from oven and let cool for about 15 minutes.

Using either chia seeds or ground flax seed, create your "egg" by mixing with 3 tbsp of water. Let sit for 15 minutes until it forms a gel.

Carefully slice open sweet potatoes and using a food processor (or mixing bowl), scoop out insides of sweet potatoes and place in food processor.

Add in the food processor the "egg", chickpea flour, olive oil, apple cider vinegar, oregano, cilantro, garlic powder, red pepper flakes and salt. Pulse until fully mixed together. Scraping down sides as needed.

Line a cookie sheet or pizza pan with parchment paper.

Scoop out the crust mixture using a spatula onto the lined cookie sheet. Slowly spreading out the crust mixture to form the crust.

Place the pan in the 400 degree preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes.

While the crust cooks, drain chickpeas and rinse. Place in bowl and add just enough BBQ sauce to cover, stir mixing well (I like to add a little black pepper and garlic powder).

When crust is done, pull from oven. Lightly brush the edges with a little olive oil.

Lightly cover crust with BBQ sauce using the back of a spoon to spread and even out.

Cover with spinach, red onion, sun dried tomatoes, jalapeno and BBQ chickpeas.

Place back in 400 degree oven and bake for 15 minutes.

Remove and let cool for 5-10 minutes, Drizzle on Vegan Ranch Dressing.

Optional: top with a little fresh cilantro.

I have found that when making the crust using hot sweet potatoes works better and comes out creamier.

I look forward to sharing my recipe for Vegan Buffalo Chickpea Sweet Potato soon!  If you love the taste of Buffalo Wings (vegan or nonvegan) you’ll flip over the amazing sweet and spicy combo!
